Hypoxia at rest or Hypoxia at night

This modality allows emulating, in part, the “Live High” (LH) approach sleeping in artificial normobaric hypoxia ~ 8-10h a day (night and nap) in the Tent to sleep in hypoxia, in addition to being able to extend the time in a hypoxic situation, spending more hours a day breathing through a mask and hypoxic generator or in a hypoxic chamber while doing passive activities such as reading, watching TV etc.

The ideal would be to spend ~ 10-14h daily for a minimum period of 12 days to 8 weeks in order to benefit from the greater changes in hematological level, increase in erythrocytes and hemoglobin concentration, diffusion capacity, tissue capillary and cell acclimatization.

Hypoxia at Rest / Night, as it is the artificial modality that exposes the athlete the longest to altitude, is the one that causes the deepest physiological adaptations and therefore should be the first hypoxic technique implemented by him.

The (simulated) altitude at which this type of hypoxia is usually practiced ranges between approximately 2000-3000m, but it is convenient to have a progression in the hypoxic stimulus, so it is best to start with lower simulated altitudes (around 1500 meters) to progressively increase the intensity of the hypoxic stimulus by raising the simulated altitude.

It is important to carry out a progressive adaptation without skipping stages so as not to impair rest or limit the effect of the hypoxic stimulus and the body’s adaptive response.

Hypoxia at Rest

Within the Hypoxia at Rest, there are different alternatives such as:

  • Sleep in hypoxia> Night and nap. What would be a Live Above approach (simulated). Example | sleep (~ 8-11h) at simulated altitude (~ 1500-3000m).
  • Exposure at rest> Example | Read, watch T.V. or any passive activity while being exposed to hypoxia for as long as possible to spend as much time as possible at “altitude”.
  • IHE> Exposure to Intermittent Hypoxia of extreme altitude in Hypoxia / Recovery microcycles. Example | Exposure to simulated altitude (~ 4500-6500m) in microcycles (5´ hypoxia / 5´ normoxia) in short sessions (~ 45´-90´).

The BioAltitude Plus and PRO Kits allow the measurement of the O2 concentration inside the sleeping tent, with the Biolaster Oxygen Analyzer. It must be borne in mind that for safety reasons, the nocturnal hypoxia tent is not airtight, which means that there is a certain renewal of the hypoxic air inside with the normoxic air outside, which means that the percentage of O2 concentration that the generator supplies will always be lower (simulated altitude higher) than the mix that is produced indoors; The O2 Analyzer allows you to monitor the exact concentration inside the store to regulate it conveniently.
